One week later

Well, we've spent our first weekend here. Survived might be the correct term. =) Friday night, we went for sushi at a different place than the one his parents usually take us to...just to try it out. Was a cute little place with some pretty damn decent sushi. I guess sushi better be decent here, as the ocean's 45 minutes away... Large party inside that we got to listen to chatting about everything from Vegas (of all things; we just smiled at each other) to skin diseases. Lovely evening, honestly. There was another couple in there with their little girl who waved every time you glanced at her. Very charming. We left, and Abe directed me (I was driving) to a Coldstone (or StoneCold as I so often accidentally refer to it), where we ordered pint-sized ice cream and took them home to eat while messing around online.
Speaking of messes...The office is a mess. It was originally in the other room (there's two extras here, as opposed to Blue Diamond's three), but we decided to leave the guests one room to themselves instead and combined the office with the craft room. So, I moved everything Friday, playing squish-through-the-teeny-hallway with furniture and boxes...like Tetris, except worse, as Abe said when he was packing the truck...because nothing's the same size. Now we've got the computers set up on old pieces of particle board that's actually intended as shelving for the garage. It cuts your arms if you rest them or slide them just right on the edges. Yummy. =)
Anyway, Saturday, Abe and I worked on the garage and the gigantic shed that's along one side of the house. It was hot and felt, to me, very humid. Things are looking good out there; we can actually find our tools! Woot!
Sunday we wandered around town. It rained again. Sooooooo nice. Windy and cold, too. This morn, it's sunny, but pretty cold still. I like that. Cold is how it's supposed to be in November.
We built some new desktops on Sunday, as well. Ebony stain over solid pine boards. The stain isn't too thick, so it's more of a gray-green. Really pretty. Abe put three coats of sealant on them, so I'm hoping they'll be dry enough to install tonight so our office won't be so janky. There's still boxes piled in here, too. And in the guest room.
His uncle came by on Saturday just after we'd finished organizing everything in the garage with a truck-load and a trailer-full of furniture...all Abe's grandma's stuff, I think. A gorgeous brown leather couch, two entertainment centers (that are too big for our living room, so one is now a hutch, and the other is in the bedroom...not sure yet what to do with it), a gorgeous glossy cherry table that can extend to seat ten, a marble entryway table, a small TV (goes good in the bedroom for now), and I'm sure there was something else, but I can't remember without going to look. The house doesn't echo as much now. I think we've got everthing where we want it; now it's just time to put our junk back, like books and pictures. I'll be unpacking more boxes in the office and guest room today. We have to go get the futon his stepdad is giving us for that room, and then we'll be set for guests! So excited.
Oh! Cleaning! Because the stuff his uncle brougth is old, we went out and found cleaning supplies for leather and wood...Murphy's soap and oils and whatnot. Polished up the table, worked on the couch, etc. But then I realized how much other stuff we have that is wood...so I got my bucket and my Murphy's and went to work. Today, I'm going to oil everything. It's pretty neat to have the correct cleaning supplies for that stuff, as I don't think any of it has ever *really* been cleaned...and I sure love cleaning. So, it's silly, but I'm excited about that.
I'm doing better. I woke up yesterday morning, all of a sudden, missing our little baby toads that kept wandering into the house out in Blue Diamond. Strange thing to miss at 4 in the morning, but I think I'd been dreaming about them and woke up thinking I needed to go check the doors, make sure none had come in...then realized they weren't here.
But there's little things that are helping. The patio out back is awesome. Oh, his uncle brought furniture for out there, too...and our hammock is set up. So, I've got my gardening stuff all set up in a three-drawer chest of drawers out there, all ready for when I can plant and work in the spring. Things are settling, falling together. That always helps, I think. Having everything in boxes and not knowing where the hell anything was and not having Internet and not knowing where to go for basic things like shampoo and dog food...was hard.
But...I have to admit, it's getting better...=) I think the prospective year ahead with a shiny new president is appealing, too. It's really weird, but knowing Bush won't be there much longer is such an uplifting thing. I know a lot of my friends were concerned we would lose, or another election would be stolen, but I never doubted Obama was going to win. It just seemed...well, natural. Like, duh. 'Course he'll win. I mean, it was either that, or we were going to have to go to Canada...and I'm done with the moving shit for a least a year. =P
Love to all.
